- Win the trust and respect of your customers
- Become the expert in your niche
Firstly, it's important to know that there is no word more powerful in the world of marketing as the word, 'free.' Think about it, especially in today's financial climate, who wouldn't want to receive something for free? If you give a person the chance to receive something for nothing, they will more than likely accept your gift. The only exception to this rule is junk mail. Everybody hates junk mail - so be careful not to dish out fluff. Doing this will rapidly hurt your reputation. What we want to do is give away valuable free content to our list.
A few things happen when we are willing to give value away at no cost. For one thing, it is immediately beneficial to your customers. And if your customers can get helpful free information from you, they will learn to trust you as a human being and they will begin to want to give back in return.
This happens due to the law of reciprocity - in other words, give and you will receive. I don't know why this law works, but it does. Initially, their giving back to you may come in the form of loyalty, and it will normally end in them wanting to spend money with you, which will hopefully lead to repeat sales.
In addition to this, if you give value to your customers at no charge, they will be inclined to believe that what you are selling must have a much higher value than what other marketers in your niche are selling, and they will consequently be more willing to part with their cash in return for your product. Of course, as you give away good, sound information, people will begin to see you as an expert in your particular field, which can only help your reputation.
There are many ways to give away valuable free content to your subscribers. For instance, you could offer a monthly newsletter, a short report, or an eCourse in return for your customers' email addresses. The key though, is that the information you give away should be focused on a hot topic that your customers are highly interested in, and it must be related to the product you are selling. At the same time you want to give away enough to be helpful, but not so much that your list will no longer need to buy your product.
To build a big, highly-responsive mailing list, DO give away something valuable, but DON'T give away the store. Give them just enough to pique their interest and satisfy part of their need, and your customers will love you for it.
Here it is again in point form:
* Give away valuable, free information that is related to your product.
* This will begin to win your subscribers' trust and loyalty.
* It will also gain you credibility in your market.
* As your subscribers get to know you they will want to give back by buying your product.
